Among the problems faced by Cypriot export companies is, in specific cases, the imposition of discriminatory and/or disproportionate regulations and/or standards by exporting countries. The removal of these trade barriers is included in the general strategy of the European Union and by extension of Cyprus to increase exports and strengthen development and the creation of new jobs.
"Barriers to trade" means the practices of a third country in imposing or maintaining barriers to trade in respect of which the rules of international trade recognize a right of action. Such a right of action exists where the rules of international trade either expressly prohibit a practice or provide another party aggrieved by the practice with the right to seek the elimination of its effect. Trade barriers are often related to subsidies, discriminatory tax treatment, technical requirements/regulations, intellectual property protection and customs clearance procedures.
